15k Mile: Power Assisted Steering

Check Fluid Level.

Damage can result if your power steering unit is low on fluid. Even a tiny leak can be critical because the high pressures that the fluid is under can cause a small leak to drain the fluid quickly,

Grunt-like noises when the steering wheel is locked to one side or the other, or foam in the reservoir is a sign of being low on power steering fluid. Be sure to repair leaks rather than merely topping off the fluid level.

Tools needed:

None.

Parts needed:

None.

Procedure:

Access the engine compartment.

You can check the fluid level when the car is hot (176˚ F or 80˚C), or when it is cold (68˚F or 20˚C). The dip stick on the cap has two scales, one for hot and one for cold.

When the car is cold, the fluid level should be in the shaded area below the "cold" marking. Top up with Pentosin if the level is low.

Make sure that the power steering fluid doesn't come into contact with any hoses.
