Accessing the Engine Compartment

Accessing the Engine Compartment

Open the convertible top until the top is about four inches or so from the header.

This will put the clamshell in the fully open position.

Reach down and pull the curtain at the rear of the top out of its holders, one on each side.

Disconnect the cable from each side of the car. The easiest way to do this is to put your hand between the cable and the car and pry the end off of the ball socket.

Now fold the rear bow up to a vertical position and drape the rear curtain on top of the car.

If you have a rear storage bin, which most cars after 98 will, remove it by lifting the semicircular handle, rotating the connector 90 degrees and lifting the bin out. There is one on each side of the car.

You'll see two more fasteners holding the carpet down. Do the same thing to disconnect them, and then lift the carpet and sound insulation off the car.

Oops, no picture of the next step. I'll have to add it later. You'll now see the heat shield and five brass colored metal rings. These are just heavy duty versions of the connectors used to hold the carpet and storage bin in place. You'll need considerably more force to remove these, but it should be a smooth motion, without twisting the rings. Once these are loose, lift the heatshield off of the car. Be very careful not to scratch the car's paint.
